The existing building is a small farm building, representative of the native rural architecture of the island of Pico, which is intended to be enlarged in order to be adapted to be inhabited. The project was developed based on the preservation of the buildings proportions and of its basalt walls, because these are the characteristics, which give its larger specificity and quality. Repeating its proportions, we have designed a new white volume that will be connected to the stone building through a black thick wall, which is the fundamental element for the resolution of the project because it will allow joining both buildings without interfering to the scale. As the land mass surrounding the small existing building, all the space created at the ground level is similar to a big black massif on which the white house seems to be suspended. This contrast will allow a clear reading of the relation between the recent white volume, and the old volume in dark stone. The concern about recovering and adapting an existing building without breaking its aesthetic and constructive balance has lead us to the union of the old volume with the new one through a thick wall, which has allowed a dialogue between the traditional building and the contemporary construction.
